The Osmund wreck

The wreck is unusually well preserved for a ship built with clinker technique It was found in Stockholm archepelago by Niklas Ekström. It´s app 20 m long and 7,8 m wide. It also has its cargo still in place. There are a little over 30 barrels visible, mostly containing so called osmund iron. Barrels with tar, ash and butter is also found in the hold. The date of the ship is based on dendro. It date´s the wreck to 1540´s (provenance Stockholm) and has been repaired in the 1550´s (provenance, south of Finland). All dated timbers are pine. The wreck has three masts and all it’s the rigging seems to be intact at the site. Blocs, deadeyes and the bowsprit i visible at the wreck site. Personal belongings, copper pot in the stove and som fabrics are also visible. Iron exports was then, and still is, one of Sweden’s most important exports but the knowledge of historic cargo ships, the trade routes and the quality of the iron is almost unknown. This wreck will be surveyd together with Jernkontoret 2021 and forward.
